Are you planning on spending more time with your grandchildren when you retire? Even if you’re not going to be caring for them full-time, you should still make sure that you’re properly prepared to be responsible for them.

Here are a few things that you should know about taking care of grandchildren in retirement.

Move Closer to Them

First, if you’re wanting to spend more time with your grandchildren in retirement, consider moving closer to them. If you live closer to your grandchildren, you won’t need to spend as much time and money traveling to see them. Plus, now that you’re retired, you have more flexibility with your living location.

You won’t need to live in an area exclusively for a job, so you can easily move closer to your kids and grandkids. If you live closer to your grandkids, you’ll be able to spend more time with them. You’ll be able to support them in their hobbies and interests as they grow up, which will be very meaningful to them.

Childproof Your Home

Next, if you’re planning on taking care of your grandchildren in retirement, you should make sure that you childproof your home. Make sure that you get rid of any choking hazards or safety risks around your home. You should secure the cords on your blinds to prevent young children from hurting themselves.

Even if your grandchildren aren’t big enough to endanger themselves at your house, you’ll probably want to childproof your home so they don’t get into any of your valuables or fragile belongings. For example, if you have nice dishes or glassware, place them up high in locked cabinets. Keep child-safe toys and games in accessible locations to make your house safer and more enjoyable for your grandchildren.

Know Their Emergency Information

Finally, make sure that you know your grandchildren’s emergency and health information in case they need to go to the doctor while you’re babysitting them or caring for them. Make sure that you’re familiar with any allergies that they might have or any medications that they need to be taking regularly. You should also know which doctors they regularly see if they get sick while you’re babysitting them. Additionally, make sure that you have their insurance information to help with the costs of a doctor’s visit. You might need written permission from your grandchildren’s parents to take them to the doctor or emergency room, so make sure that you’re familiar with any rules regarding their healthcare.

So, if you’re looking forward to spending more time with your grandchildren, remember these tips. You can consider moving closer to them, childproofing your home, and knowing their emergency information. This will help you to better care for your grandchildren, whether you’re babysitting for a few hours or caring for them long-term.
